About Parks & Gardens

SAHELION – KI – BADI :- Sahelion-ki-badi (Girl Friends Garden or Honoured Girls Garen) just adjoining the east of the embankment of Fatehsagar lake was constructed in its present from by Maharana Fateh Singh after the original garden had been washed away on account of the breach of its old embankment. A Profusion of flowers, well laid court yards and lotuspool studded with water fountains guarded by four marble elephants – each elephant sculptured out of a single piece of stone – will feast the eyes of visitors. Spacious and well maintained lawns, beautified by blooming flowers and the setting of huge groves of trees, present a spectacular Sight to enjoy. It is also aptly called the Garden of Fountains. When the fountains are in their showery action creating arain-like sounds, white elephants spout water from their lovely trunks on lotus leaves and water cascades from the circular eaves of the pavilion standing in a huge water pool – visitors find themselves amidst the rain-like scenes and atmosphere to be seen, believed and enjoyed. The garden has assumed the attraction of being one of the glamour-spots of the city cine-film shooters and has contributed considerably to the scenic beauty of a number of film pictures. On completing his visit of the garden, the visitor will feel himself carried into a fairy-land permeated with romantic air.

SAJJAN NIWAS GARDEN/GULAB BAGH :- SAJJAN NIWAS GARDEN Sajjan Niwas garden about a 100 acre area and having plentiful verdure, was laid out by Mahaarana Sajjan Singh (1859-74). It has electrically lit and well planned tarred roads, well maintained spacious lawns, a good museum, a library (containing rarest and valuable paintings, manuscripts and books of historical importance) and a zoo. The main water pumping station and water reservoir of the recently laid out comprehensive water supply scheme are also here. A visit to this garden would be soothing

NEHRU PARK :- NEHRU PARK (Fatehsagar Lake) Thirty years ago, as a famine relief work, a 2000 – ft. peripherial wall was raised to enclose an area of 5 acre around an island to construct a water palace in the Fatehsagar Lake. But the construction was abandoned as soon as the famine conditions were over, and the 5 acre walled islet was left neglected to turn, during the last 30 years, into a mysterious haunt of thorny trees and shrubs, raptiles, swamp and stink. The State government has recently converted this one time a dreadful island into a beautiful park dedicated to the memory of the late Prime Minister Shri Jawahar Lal Nehru. It was inaugurated on the 14th of November, 1967 by the Governor of Rajasthan. The park – rectangual in shape with semi-circular ends; crowned by chhatries on each corner, by a baradari on the northern fringe and by an inviting suit in a honey moon-like silence on the southern side – all facing the vast sheet of the blue waters of the lake; dootted by luch green lawns and studden with arrays of flowers in multitude of enchantin clours in riot; enlivened by play of colourful fountains of changing geometrics and lit in the night and eflecting into the ripples of the lake – looks like a fairy land seemingly afloat on the water. A 375 feet RCC bridge links the 80 seata boad shaped café with the park, and provides a delightful walk over the water; a gigantic jet fountain in the lake spouts up the colourful sprays of water to a dizzy height of 150 feet; boats move hither and thither in a hectic way; hundreds of visitors stroll in a gay mood and silvery lights sparkle over the calm waters. The whole environment of the lake presents an enchanting carnival to be seen and believed. Boat service is available on the boat – ghat over Municipal Rock Garden on the lake at a nominal charge per head.

NEHRU MUNICIPAL CHILDREN’S PARK :- This 5 acre park, thrown open in Jan. 1966 ; and situated within the precincts of Municipal offices and Town Hall, is ideally located in the heart of the town. A huge oval pool, fountains, comfortable benches, spacious green lawns, rockeries colourful shrubbery ; RCC made interesting objects like the water pitcher of generous size, and animals like camel, elephant, horse; swings and slides are among the various attractions that invite thousands of children and their parents every day in this park. Boating by amusingly shaped boats around fountains in action in the pool, and joy rides by children in the goat cart-all in the soberly lit atmosphere provide an enjoyable fun and fair to be seen and believed.
