Pichola Lake :- This scenic lake , surrounded
by Palaces, Temples, Ghats and Hills, is the largest in
Udaipur & derives its name from Picholi village, flooded long ago so as to
enlarge the lake .Actually it consists offour diferrent lakes viz. the
original Pichola, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar and Doodh Talaai. Rising from
the lake are the two island Palaces of Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir . Gangaur
Ghat lies on the Bank of Lake Pichola and is famous for the Bird's eye
view of The City Palace, Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, Bagore ki Haveli and a
complete look of old City Havelis and Buildings. Lake Pichola is the most
known Area of interest among the Foreign Tourists. Since the old City had
its origin from the Bank of Pichola, the area surrounding Lake could
present you all the stuff required to know Mewar better. The Tourists are
most inclined towards staying in the Hotels and Guest Houses situated on
the Bank of Lake Pichola because the view from the Terraces of these
Places are simply marvelous. It may be recalled that Pichola lake was
constructed by a ‘Banjara’ during the reign of Maharana Lakha Sunset in
the evening and the sight of the ‘Whale Hill’(closing resembling the
‘Whale’ in appearance) in the southeast of the lake also deserve a mention
for tourists.
Fateh Sagar Lake :- This charming and
tranquil lake was constructed by Maharana Jai Singh to the North of Lake
Pichola. A Canal links the two. The Lake is bordered on three sides by
Wooden
Hills and on the fourth side it is dammed. Originally, this lake was
constructed by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678 A.D., but later on account of
excessive rains, it gave way destroying Sahelion Ki Bari. Therefore,
Maharana Fateh SinghJi got it reconstructed in the present shape at the
cost of 6 lakhs of rupees, and hence, it was renamed ‘Fateh Sagar’
Visitors can take a short Trip across to exquisite Nehru Island Park,
which is the focal point in the Lake.Attractions :(a) Nehru Island Park in
the center of Fatehsagar Lake, which is reached by taking a short Boating
trip.(b) Pratap Memorial is a Garden on Hillock on the Bank of Lake Fateh
Sagar.(c) Udaipur Solar Observatory having one of the most powerful
Telescopes in the world, also lies on an Island in Fateh Sagar Lake.(d)
Sanjay Garden lies on the other side of Lake has calm and serene
ambience.(e) Cycling on Rani Road. The Road which runs along the Bank of
Lake Fateh Sagar is called Rani Road. Very often the Tourist takes a Cycle
Ride on this Road to enjoy the surrounding.(f) Neemach Mata Temple is also
close to lake fateh Sagar (hardly 1 Kilometer) which is built on the top
of A Hill is reached by stepping about 800 Stairs
Udai Sagar :- Udai SagarMaharana Udai Singh
expecting a threat of God to the new City of Udaipur, ordered and
completed the Lake of Udai Sagar during 1559-65 at a distance of 13 Kms.
from Udaipur. The Lake has been constructed as a massive bund of huge
Stones of 54 Mts. wide embankment with the 9 Meter Depth, 4 Kms. length,
2.5 Kms. width and 10.5 Sq. Kms. covered area. The huge embankment made up
of Stone is different from the Bund of other Lakes. It has stood
challenges of rain. If the Lake overflows, the Channel will plunge into
Water of River of Berach creating a very lovely and beautiful scene. The
River of Ayad is its tributary. Kumwar Man Singh of Amer invited Pratap on
the embankment of Udai Sagar in 1573 but Pratap refused the invitation.
Ultimately Pratap's refusal became a cause of the famous battle of
Haldigahti between Pratap and Akbar in june 1576. Another historic event
which took place near Udai Sagar was defeat of Army of Aurangzeb by the

Badi Lake (Jiyan Sagar) :- The Badi lake
(because it is near Badi village) also known as Jiyan sagar, named after
Jana Devi, the mother of Maharana Raj Singh, is at a distance of 10kms.in
the north-east of Udaipur. It was built in 1684 A.D. at a cost of about 6
lakhs of rupees. The Lake has an embankment of 1.55 Square Kms., 180 Mts.
being long and 18 Mts. deep. Three Artistic Chatris (Umbrella shaped shad)
are also there . During the drought in period the Lake had supplied water
to the people of Udaipur city with Pipeline. Badi Sanitarium of 100 Beds
is closed to the lake, Dr. Rajendra Prasaad(The President of India)
inaugurated it on May 2nd 1960. It is Hospital for T.B. Patients and is
called Ram Prasad Bhuvalka Arogya Sadan.
Baghdadha Lake :- Bagdada LakeDistance : 24
Kms. from UdaipurThe Baghdada means Adobe of the Tigers. The Lake
Baghdadha is a small but deep Pond surrounded by Hills which were haunted
by Tigers in the past. The Lake is declared as 'Crocodile protected' Lake,
because of a good number of Crocodiles living in surroundings of water.
Sometimes these huge sized Crocodiles are seen lying on the bank of Lake.
So it could be a useful Trip for nature-lovers also. Baghdadha is close to
Debari Zinc Smelter which is Udaipur's one of major Industries. A
well-known Picnic Spot 'Jhameshwarji' is also close to Baghdadha Lake,
Jahmeshwarji has a Temple of Lord Shiva and a shallow River with very mild
flow making a small Waterfall. This Place is also worth visiting.
Jaisamand Lake :- Jaisamand LakeJaisamand
Lake is also known as Dhebar.The lake, built by
Maharana Jai Singh in 1685, is the second biggest artificial lake of the
world covering an area of 36sq km. The lake remained the largest
artificial lake in the world till the building of the Aswan dam in Egypt.
The statistics of the lake is really amazing – 9 miles in breadth, 102
feet deep at its deepest end, a circumference of 30 miles with marble
staircases leading into the water. The summer palaces of the Queens of
Udaipur surround Jaisamand Lake on all sides. There are seven islands on
this lake and the tribe of Bhil Minas (see People of Rajasthan) inhabits
all. Two bigger islands are known as Babaka Bhagra and a smaller is called
Piari. There is a bund on the lake, which has to be mentioned due to its
sheer size – 1202 feet long, 116 feet high and 70 feet broad at the base.
On the dam are six exotic cenotaphs and a Shiva temple in the centre. The
northern end of the lake has a palace with a courtyard while its southern
end has a pavilion of 12 pillars. The hills to its south have grand
palaces that have an excellent view of the lake. Tourists can even enjoy
the beauty of the lake by motor boats or simply play with its water by
diving and swimming.
