About Agarthala

Agartala, the capital of Tripura is rich in flora and fauna and is a mini storehouse of rich cultural diversity. It gained prominence when Maharaja Krishna Manikya shifted his capital here in the 19th century. It has one of the loveliest State Assembly and a number of lakes in different parts of the city that attract many tourists.

Attractions In & Around

Fourteen Goddess TempleThe temple is located about 14 kms from Agartala at a place called the old Agartala, thus called because the capital was temporarily shifted to this place while Maharaja Krishna Manikya was at war with Shamser Gazi. The famous Kharchi Festival celebrated here, annually, during the month of July attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Kunjaban Palace :- Built in 1917 by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, the palace was originally called Pushbanta Palace. It is located about 1 km away from the Ujjayanta Palace. It is now the official residence of the Governor of Tripura with well-laid gardens and lawns. The southern part of the palace is named as Rabindra Kanan and is open to the public.

Malancha Niwas:-  This is a bungalow adjacent to Kunjaban palace, which was originally a temporary house, where Tagore stayed during his visit in 1919, but subsequently was made a permanent one and named Malancha Niwas. It was mainly meant for pleasure and rest house of Maharajas.

Sepahijala:-  This sanctuary located amidst the Charilam Reserve Forest, covers 18 sq kms area and is now a national park. A reservoir of about 150 species of birds, the spectacled monkey is the major attraction of this area and a drive through the dense forest, ride on the toy train and pedal boating in the expansive lake make this a unique tourist spot.

Ujjayanta Palace  The major attraction of Agartala is Ujjayanta Palace built in 1901 by Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya. The mansion is two storeyed with beautiful gardens, fountains, parks and tanks. At present, it houses the State Legislature Assembly. The palace is floodlit at night.
